sbo333 Is Italy's sleeping giant finally waking up? Ahead of AC Milan's Europa League last-16 tie with Arsenal, Nick Wright looks at how Gennaro Gattuso has turned their season around and got them dreaming of a return to the glory days...

Genaro Gattuso produced all the soundbites you might expect when he was unveiled as AC Milan's new head coach in November. "We need a battlefield spirit," he growled. There was talk of "great passion" and a "never-say-die attitude". "I never want to lose," he added, "even playing table football against my son."

The former midfielder was typically bullish, but there was no hiding the size of the task ahead. Milan had spent close to £200m on 11 new signings in the summer, but a stuttering start to the season under Vicenzo Montella had left them 18 points off the top after just 14 Serie A games. For the new owners targeting a quick return to the top, patience had run out.

Gattuso's competitive edge was unchanged from his playing days and there was no disputing his love for Milan, but the scepticism which greeted his appointment was understandable. A distinguished playing career had been followed by largely unconvincing spells in charge of Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa. Most recently, he had coached Milan's U19s.

Gattuso had the goodwill of the Rossoneri supporters who cherished his service on the pitch, but was he really the right man for the dugout? Beyond the chest-thumping and the rallying cries, did he have the managerial acumen to turn AC Milan's season around? sbo333

The early signs were not encouraging. Gattuso could hardly have asked for a kinder opening fixture than a trip to Benevento, who were yet to pick up a single point in Serie A, but Milan were denied victory by an extraordinary stoppage-time equaliser from goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli. "Maybe it would've been better to get stabbed than concede this goal," said Gattuso afterwards.

That sucker-punch was followed by an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Croatian side Rijeka in the Europa League, and soon there were domestic defeats to Verona and Atalanta too. A month into the job and the pressure was already mounting on Gattuso. "Disaster," read one headline in La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It will be a low-key Christmas at Milan." sbo333

Why Unai Emery’s £35m former protege could be the man to solve Arsenal’s midfield problems

sbo168 According to reports, Arsenal are interested in signing Sevilla star Steven Nzonzi in the summer transfer window. The Gunners, who have reportedly identified Nzonzi as the man to add steel to their midfield, have received a boost in his chase as Sevilla are showing an interest in Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente.

The fact that Sevilla are looking out for alternatives could be a big sign for the Gunners that the Spanish side are ready to let Nzonzi depart, with the Frenchman having a £35m release clause in his contract. Arsene Wenger left Arsenal after 22 long years after the end of the last season and the north Londoners have appointed Unai Emery to take the club back to the top. Emery has shown an urgency and desire to succeed at the Emirates Stadium after quickly snapping up Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus.

Besides the defence, Arsenal also need to strengthen their central midfield area. Granit Xhaka has failed to live up to his reputation since joining Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, while Aaron Ramsey has blown hot and cold.On the other hand, Jack Wilshere, who is out of contract at the end of this month, has been linked with a move away from the club in the summer. So, signing a quality midfield player this summer should be on top of Emery’s priority list. sbo168

And Nzonzi could be the right player to solve Arsenal’s midfield conundrum next season. It was Emery, who signed Nzonzi from Stoke City during his time in charge of Sevilla. And having worked with the player previously, the Spanish boss is aware of the Frenchman’s strengths and weaknesses. There is very little doubt that Nzonzi would fit the bill perfectly at Arsenal, following his impressive displays for Sevilla. The 29-year-old has been a revelation since moving to La Liga and he is exactly the type of player the Gunners have been missing since Patrick Vieira left for Juventus in 2005. sbo168
